How to Maintain Deck Railings

Decks are a popular addition to backyards, and one of the most important parts of the deck is a good railing. Not all decks require a railing - it depends on the height of the deck. But for those who do have railings, it’s important to keep up with their maintenance.

Here are some tips for maintaining deck railings:

Clean them regularly: While pressure washing the deck itself and the house, don’t forget the railings. They tend to accumulate dirt, cobwebs, and more. If not cleaned off, debris can cause the materials to deteriorate and weaken the structure.

Check for loose rails: Keep on top of any loose rails. Not only can a loose rail or two make the entire railing wobbly, but usually those loose rails have nails poking out. Keeping up with a loose rail here and there is a lot easier than having to repair the entire railing, so check them regularly and fix those minor issues before they become a bigger problem.

Protect your investment: Keeping the wood healthy will go a long way in protecting the life of deck rails. Make sure to condition the wood and stain or paint it to protect it from the elements. It’s tedious work, but with a little time, and a good staining mitt, it’ll be done before you know it.

Consider alternate materials: For easier maintenance, consider a different material for the deck rails. Opting for aluminum, vinyl, glass or even cable railings not only adds visual interest to a deck but also cut down on maintenance.

Trust the pros: We’re all for DIYing as long as people know their limits. If in doubt, get someone with experience to do the work.
