Winter is coming and we’re still spending more time at home than ever before. Those screened-in porches that have been essential to our home-centered life are now about to become useless as chilly days become the norm in the Triangle. Not on our watch! We love our porches and want to enjoy them year-round.

Here are some tips and tricks to make the most out of a screened-in porch this winter:

  1. Clean it up: We know we preach maintenance, but you’ve got to do it. Take some time to make any repairs and give the space a good cleaning. This includes the furniture and any soft surfaces (cushions, rugs, window treatments, etc.)
  2. Heat it up: Check into heating options to keep your screened-in porch warm. From typical plug-in space heaters to faux fireplaces to small table-top fire pits, there are a ton of options on the market. Just make sure to follow safety precautions to avoid injuries and property damage.
  3. Dress it up: Make the porch a cozy destination. Add some accessories and cozy blankets to make it an extension of the home. Consider using a slightly different color palette to make the porch reflect the cooler, cozier season. Lighting can make a huge difference, especially with the short, gray winter days.
  4. Take it up a notch: There are a few ways to transform a screened-in porch so that it is usable most of the year without paying to convert it to a sunroom. Some are professional solutions, such as custom removable coverings for the screens, while others are more DIY-friendly, like hanging clear vinyl curtains.
