When customers tell us that they’re not sure what they want, but they think their yard needs a little something more, our thoughts always go to a pergola. We’re certainly seeing more and more of them in the Triangle area, so we’re not the only ones thinking it!

Here are four perks of adding a pergola to a backyard:

  1. Shade: Although most pergolas have an open beam roof, they still provide lots of shade. This is especially useful in the scorching summers we get. Shade is a definite advantage of pergolas, especially in new construction homes where it will take decades for trees to grow for shade.
  2. Architectural interest: Cleared lots and cookie-cutter subdivisions lack architectural interest. Adding a pergola to a home is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to add charm to a home. It can give focus and purpose to a yard.
  3. Privacy: Any time a structure is built in a backyard, it adds at least a little bit of privacy to the space. A pergola adds a physical barrier, but also sends a message that it’s not a public space. As open as they are, they function as a room and add privacy to the yard.
  4. Coziness: This is different from privacy. There’s something about pergolas that give people that feeling that they had when they played in blanket forts when they were kids. Having an outdoor dinner with friends under a pergola is much cozier than on a typical patio or deck. It adds tons of ambiance which is great for entertaining groups or just cozying up with a book.

A pergola can do a lot for a backyard. If you are looking for a wow factor for your home, a pergola can be just the thing. Sierra Structures can help make this happen! Contact us to get started.
