A wood fence is an excellent way to provide your yard with privacy.  Wood fences are also a beautiful addition to your space. However, regular fence maintenance is a must to maintain the beauty of your fence as well as the quality. Performing a few simple tasks will extend the life of your fence.

3 ways to maintain your fence:

  • Cleaning:   Using a pressure washer to wash your fence is an important part of maintenance.  Using a cleaning solution designed for wood fences is an easy way to clear stubborn dirt and stains. Applying the solution to the fence with a sprayer prior to pressure washing will make the job easier. Make sure to clear all leaves and debris from your fence whenever it begins to build up.  This prevents accumulation of dirt and moisture which can lead to wet rot, mold and mildew.
  • Repairs: Nails and fasteners on your fence will become loose over time as the fence expands and contracts due to weather changes. Keep an eye out for loose or missing nails and be sure to replace any that are missing.  Take time on an annual basis to replace any boards that may become split or warped.
  • Staining:  It is a good idea to stain your wood fence soon after installation. This will help protect the fence from dry and wet rot. Loss of protective oils causes the wood to become dry and brittle. Wet rot is caused when the boards are constantly exposed to moisture. Staining the fence after installation will prevent either of these from occurring.  Reapplying stain on an annual basis will help your fence last for years to come.
