A fence can be a rather large investment! Whether you added the fence or if it was a part of the home when you purchased it, you want to protect it. But how?

Our team at Sierra Structures always go over fence maintenance with each of our customers, but we wanted to share a few tips here in case you need help.

4 regular maintenance tips for your home’s fence are:

  1. Cleaning: It is a good idea to have the fence pressure washed at least once every 2 to 3 years. This will remove dirt and debris that could degrade the fence over time.
  2. Re-staining: If your wood fence is stained, it is important to re-stain the fence every few years. A good rule of thumb is to re-stain every two times you have it pressure washed which is about 4 to 6 years.
  3. Weather Events: After a weather event, whether it is a thunderstorm, hurricane, or just a lot of wind, it is a good idea to walk around your fence and make sure there is no additional damage to the fence. If there is damage, reach out to a Durham fence company and get it fixed.
  4. Branches and Limbs: Every year, walk the perimeter of the fence and ensure that no roots are growing up into the fence or branches have fallen around the fence. Most homeowners choose to do this in the Fall while cleaning up leaves that have fallen.

If you have an iron fence, most of these items are still applicable. However, with an iron fence, it is important to keep an eye out for rust.

If your fence is about 10 years old, it might be time to consider a new fence. If you are getting close to that point, take a moment and use our fence calculator to get an idea on how much that would cost.
