Backyard Trends We Hope to See in 2022

Each new year is a chance for new beginnings. Hot new trends emerge—whether it’s playing Wordle or listening to K-Pop. At Sierra Structures, we like to stay up to date with what is trending in our industry as well, and here are some backyard trends we hope to see in 2022:

1. Year-round outdoor climate control: Bad weather shouldn’t keep people stuck inside. Incorporate some new climate control items, and you can relax on your patio all year long. For cold weather, consider hanging overhead heating lamps or build a fire pit table. For those hot summer months, consider swamp coolers. These are energy efficient outdoor evaporative coolers.

2. Vertical and multi-tiered gardens: The beauty of these are that they take up very little footprint in your backyard but allow for multiple flowers, vegetables, and other plants while adding beauty and greenery to your backyard in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

3. Outdoor kitchens and dining rooms: Patios can be much more functional than just a place to lounge around. Entertaining can include dining and food prep areas that include sinks, mini-fridges, gas ranges, bricked pizza ovens, and of course, that barbecue grill.

4. Work-from-home outdoor offices: As more and more roles become permanent WFH jobs, no one says you must permanently do it from the kitchen table or a corner of a guest room. We suggest adding spots that are comfortable and provide sunshine and the clean air from your backyard. This could be a deck expansion or even a new area separate from the house.

5. Comfortable furniture: Patio furniture has improved greatly in the last several years. Gone are plastic and cheap wicker seats. Now, weather-resistant materials with plush cushions are in. Look at your home’s décor and pick outdoor furnishings that match—especially to what your patio design appears like.
